Data sources
Vizion's API provides milestones that contain a source property indicating the data source of the event
Carrier
When the source property of an event shows "carrier," it means that the information was provided by the ocean carrier. This source is the most common as it directly comes from the carrier's systems.
AIS
AIS, or Automatic Identification System, is a tracking technology used for vessel tracking. If the source property of an event shows "ais," it means that the event was generated based on the vessel's AIS signal.
Even if the carrier does not report a departure event, Vizion's API can provide departure information using AIS data. Specifically, if a load event with vessel information is available, AIS can be leveraged to identify and report the departure. This ensures you still receive critical milestone updates even when carrier-reported data is incomplete.
Ports and terminals
If the source property of an event shows "terminal," it means that the event was generated by the terminal. These will include milestones not commonly reported by steamship lines, such as 'Free time to expire' and 'Available for pickup,' which are sourced directly from terminal operators. This allows you to receive events like 'Discharged from Vessel,' 'Gate Out Full,' and 'Gate in Empty Return' without needing to rely solely on carriers.
Rail
When the source property of an event shows "rail," it means that the event was generated by the rail line. These will include milestones such as 'Container available for pickup,' 'Loaded on rail,' 'Rail arrival,' and 'Rail departure.
Vizion
When the source property of an event shows "vizion," the milestone is a Vizion Predictive ETA: Vizion's own estimated arrival, generated from vessel schedule and voyage data rather than reported by the carrier or a terminal. It is an independent estimate, and it can be present even on shipments where the carrier has not published an ETA.
Vizion Predictive ETAs currently apply to the destination port arrival (the Vessel arrived at destination port milestone when planned is true). They are available for select accounts, and are not emitted when Vizion has no confident estimate, so they will not appear on every shipment. See Vizion Predictive ETAs for details.
