Smart Updates
How Vizion adapts data collection frequency to a shipment's status to reduce latency
Vizion collects tracking data from many sources across carriers, terminals, and rail providers. With Smart Updates, Vizion adjusts how often each source is checked based on a shipment's current status, rather than checking every source at the same fixed interval regardless of where a shipment stands in its journey.
Smart Updates is enabled by default on both Demo and Production environments.
How it works
Smart Updates prioritizes the data sources most likely to have new information at any given point in a shipment's journey. For example, a shipment moving across open water between port calls doesn't need to be checked as often as a container currently sitting at a terminal or moving by rail, where status can change within hours.
By checking more relevant sources more often at the right time, Vizion can catch and deliver a new tracking event sooner, rather than waiting for the next check on a flat schedule regardless of whether an update is actually likely.
Smart Updates works alongside Configurable tracking frequency. If Smart Updates is turned off for your account, checks fall back to your account's flat configured interval (12 hours by default, or a faster interval if you've requested one).
Why it matters
- Reduced latency: the gap between when a tracking event actually happens and when it's reflected in your reference update shrinks, especially around key transition points like arrival, discharge, and transshipment.
- More reliable reference updates: creating a reference update is less dependent on any single source, which reduces gaps caused by an extraction issue on one particular source.
Turning off Smart Updates
If you'd prefer a flat check interval instead, Smart Updates can be turned off for your account by contacting support.
